Using The Whole Neck
One move can go along way.
In today’s lesson, we’re diving into the art of navigating the entire fretboard using a single move in one key. We’ll focus on the key of E, utilizing the E major pentatonic scale. This five-note scale comprises the root (R), 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and repeats the root, essentially omitting the 4th and 7th notes of the full major scale. We’ll begin by learning the move on the low E string and progressively shift to the A, D, G, and B strings. It’s important to remember that the tuning difference of the B string may alter finger placement slightly, but don’t let that deter you. The key is to identify and remember where the root notes are located on the neck, as this understanding is crucial to mastering the fretboard.
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with this move on each individual string, we can start combining octaves to traverse the entire neck seamlessly. For instance, in example #6 in tab, you’ll start on the low E string, move to the 2nd fret of the D string, then to the 5th fret of the B string, and finally, reach the 12th fret of the high E string. Similarly, in example #7, we begin on the A string, make our way to the root note on the 9th fret of the G string, and conclude again on the 12th fret of the high E string. This approach not only reinforces your understanding of the fretboard but also enhances your ability to play fluidly across the entire neck.
As your homework, challenge yourself to apply this method to other keys. The technique remains unchanged; only the notes will differ. This exercise will reveal the immense power and versatility of understanding the fretboard. By internalizing these moves and patterns, you’ll unlock new musical possibilities and gain greater confidence in your playing. Remember, the journey of learning is both rewarding and enjoyable. So, immerse yourself in practice, have fun, and watch your skills transform! PDF TAB DOWNLOAD
